2009 I.G.A. General Meeting

Following its 154th General Meeting, held in mid-May in Halifax, the Board of Directors of the International Grenfell Association has approved new grants for 2009 totalling $1,127,050, in support of the people of the Northern Peninsula and Labrador.

These grants will benefit projects sponsored by the area’s Labrador Grenfell Integrated Health Authority, the two School Boards (Western School Board and the Labrador School Board), as well as a variety of community groups.

The IGA received and reviewed a total of 93 applications, with a total dollar value of $2,930,934. Of these requests, a total of 54 were approved (five additional proposals will be re-considered at the IGA’s next Board meeting in September in Goose Bay).

In addition, the annual IGA Scholarship Program (supported with $190,000 for this current year), has been renewed, in support of up to 64 students from the Grenfell area in their post-secondary academic pursuits.

The Chairman of the IGA, Dr. Norman Pinder, notes,

"This year the International Grenfell Association has been able to award grants totalling in excess of one million dollars.  It is especially pleasing to have achieved this at a time when so many organizations and communities are feeling the effects of financial pressure and can benefit all the more from IGA support.  Successful applicants will now receive funds to help community development, improve health services, support education in schools and assist students through individual scholarships and bursaries.  Hopefully IGA's contribution this year will create opportunities for many people on the coast and make a difference".
