Position Statements
At its June, 2005, Board meeting, IGA Directors and Officers discussed matters relating to certain areas of grant requests that may help clarify IGA's position going forward, while enabling IGA to maintain sole discretion to decide on such matters as individual circumstances of proposals warrant.
The matters considered, and positions accepted, were:
a) Standardization of Playground Requests:
- Maximum of $10,000 per playground, not including site work.
- Standard Equipment as the first purchase.
- Only one playground grant will be awarded in a community for each ten year period. If the community already has a playground, IGA will not grant funds to start another from scratch.
- Applicant must state what their community already has at time of proposal.
- If possible, the site for the playground is to be near a community center, with the proposal to IGA to provide a map detailing location.
b) Nutritional Supplementation
- Proposals are to be considered under special circumstances only, and must outline an innovative approach to the issue of nutrition.
c) Maintenance and General Upkeep
- IGA is to exercise flexibility on such requests, based on individual merit of proposal(s).
- Applicants in this area must demonstrate community support, either in terms of monetary support or in "sweat equity".
- Changes to buildings must present advantages over previous use.
d) Snowmobile and Ski Clubs
- IGA, ideologically, will support ski clubs more so than snowmobile clubs.
- Proposals must focus on community development and wellness.
- Snowmobiles are not in IGA's interest, as they require replacing.
- Proposals must be endorsed by municipal and other community agencies.
- Additional sources of funding must be accessed.
e) Religious Groups
- IGA will not entertain applications from single religious affiliations.
- Benefit must be for all community members brought together for common purpose(s), and not just one identifiable religion.
- Applications must be under the guise of community development, as opposed to buildings and construction-type activity.
f) Computer Pricing (mainly in schools)
- This area is to be evaluated each year, given pricing changes.
- Schools must abide by the Public Tendering Act.
g) Accelerated Reader Programs (again, mainly in schools)
- Future proposals must be accompanied by verifiable, quantifiable results.
- Schools are to indicate what proportion of the total student population is involved in such programming.
- Applications of this type will continue to be accepted, based on their own individual merit(s).
h) Fire Departments
- Applications are to be considered only if there has been a proven attempt to secure other funding.
- Matching or supplementary funding is preferred.
