PROJECT REPORT

Progress Report on an Education Grant
PROJECT TITLE:

Building School Literacy Collections
Throughout School District #2

NAME/ADDRESS OF GRANTEE:

Sylvia Saunders
Primary Program Specialist
P.O. Box 82
Lower Cove, NL

PROJECT AIMS AND/OR OBJECTIVES
To purchase literature in all schools for students in K-8
- including "a range of genres, among them, informational texts, visual and poetic texts..."
Objectives:
- Support for a wide range of learners
- Support the 'best practice' reading strategy of guided reading by providing a range of text
- Provision of appropriate reading material in a range of genres and texts that support literacy and critical thinking

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF EACH OBJECTIVE
Re: Support for a wide range of learners and support the 'best practice' reading strategy of guided reading by providing a range of text:

Momentum Guided Reading Kits (3 for grade 4 and 2 for grade 5) have been purchased. These kits include sets of 6 books, both fiction and non-fiction, and at a range of levels. Teachers can select from them texts to use for guided reading with particular groups of students. These resources
- are being piloted in 5 classrooms in the spring of 2004, (to meet special pricing requirements)
- will be distributed among all grade 4 and 5 classes in the district in the fall of 2004.

Re: Provision of appropriate reading material in a range of genres and text that support literacy and critical thinking. The following have been ordered and
- The Momentum Kits described above include both fiction and non-fiction. In addition, the following have been purchased for every school:
- The Untamed World. A set of non-fiction books about animals that have a variety of visuals and visual organizers. It is particularly appropriate for use in elementary grades.
- The News 1. A non-fiction set on a variety of topics across the curriculum, and areas of student interest. Each of the 20 volumes contains samples of a variety of genres related to a topic. Again, it is particularly appropriate to elementary students.
- Two titles of children's literature that relate to math topics have been ordered for each school.
- A poetry anthology. Schools made their selections, with recommendations, if requested, from a provided list. Focus teachers were given the opportunity to view sample texts, so that more informed selections could be made.

The Untamed World and The News 1 have already been distributed to schools. The math-related children's literature and poetry anthologies are on order.

Schools have been asked to ensure that these books are housed in the classrooms, rather than the library, to maximize student access to and benefits from them. (Research shows that students read 50% more when books are in the classroom as opposed to the library.)

WAS/WERE THERE ANY SHORTFALL/S TO MEETING PROJECT OBJECTIVES? EXPLAIN.
In making our original application, we had hoped to support students in a wider range of grades. With the funds granted, we prioritized the elementary grades (grades 4 and 5 for guided reading sets) and in genres for them, information texts and poetry. However, particularly at the intermediate/junior high levels, (but also with guided reading in grade 6) we were not able to provide resources to support their literacy needs, as intended. Hence, an application for phase 2 has been submitted.

WAS PROJECT COMPLETED IN THE PROPOSED TIMEFRAME? IF NOT, WHY NOT?
Yes. The timeframe was ongoing. All purchases will be in all schools by the spring, with the exception of the guided reading kits and math-related literature. In order to increase the purchasing power of the grant, the Momentum Kits were bought with an agreement to pilot and provide feedback. This qualified us for a 50% discount. Hence, the kits are being piloted in the spring, and will be distributed to schools in the fall of 2004.

PLEASE PROVIDE THE BUDGET FROM PROJECTS ORIGINAL APPLICATION, AS WELL AS ACTUAL EXPENDITURE(S) FOR EACH ITEM.

WHAT HAS/HAVE BEEN THE IMPACT(S) OF YOUR PROJECT
The purchased resources have not been in the school long enough to comment on the full impact on students. However, at this point we can report that schools have a greater range of good literacy resources at the elementary level. This is important if teachers are to be able to teach students to understand different genres and how to read them effectively. This also enables students to independently experience different types of texts, on a range of topics, according to their interests and needs.

Students benefit from the resources placed in the schools will be ongoing, as they are used by teachers and students for learning to read, reading to learn, reading for interest or pleasure, and combinations of these.

Thank you to the International Grenfell Association for this support of literacy in our schools!

Further IGA funding has been applied for to implement the next phase - providing literacy resources in grades 6 to 8.
