1) PROJECT TITLE AND LOCATION:
Special Needs Summer Camp Program
"Rainbow Summer Camp"
St. Anthony, NL
2) NAME/ADDRESS OF GRANTEE:
Deanne Costello
Grenfell Regional Health Services
St. Anthony, NL
A0K 4S0
3) PROJECT AIMS AND OBJECTIVES (consult item #24 of original application):
Goals: To provide children with special needs a unique opportunity for summer recreation and socialization; to improve social and behavioural skills; and to enhance learning with appropriate stimulation.
Goals to be reached through completion of the following tasks:
i) Hire a coordinator
ii) Contact camp participants and parents
iii) Develop registration process, and process for identifying special needs
iv) Seek community supports
v) Recruit volunteers
vi) Identify main venue for camp
vii) Develop and conduct camp program, including activities, outings, purchase of supplies and food
4) BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF EACH OBJECTIVE (consult item #24 from your organization's original application):
i) A coordinator was hired for a twelve week period (June 9- August 29), who was responsible for achieving the above-noted tasks.
ii) A brochure advertising the camp was developed and sent to parents of potential camp participants.
iii) Registration forms were developed and forwarded to parents. These forms allowed for identification of individual needs and preferences of camp participants.
iv) Community supports were identified and contacted throughout the twelve week period. Support included donations of food; rent-free space at the local Boy's and Girl's Club; discounts at venues such as the swimming pool,
campground, boat tour and other local attractions; provision of free entertainment by local performers; participation by local health professionals; and a free Viking dinner theatre, provided by an area restaurant.
v) Volunteers were recruited, including older Rainbow Program children, parents, caregivers, and other community members. Volunteers assisted with food preparation, transportation, providing assistance to camp participants, and conducting craft and entertainment sessions.
vi) The main venue for the camp was the St. Anthony Boy's and Girl's Club. Full cooperation was received from the Club's Board, as well as from the Club's Program Coordinator. Rainbow Camp activities often occurred in conjunction with the Club's activities, which supported the integration of special needs children with other children. Grenfell Park, the St. Anthony Olympia swimming pool, and other town attractions were also regular venues.
vii) A nine-week camp program was developed. Camp occurred three afternoons per week, as well as one overnight tenting trip at an out-of-town camping facility. Schedules were developed (see attached sample), and provided to participants and parents so they could plan their attendance at camp. Camp activities included arts and crafts, "creative snacks", whereby participants made their own nutritious snacks, sports, swimming, picnics, visiting local attractions, entertainment by local singers, treasure hunt, barbeques, whale-watching tour, making pizzas at a local restaurant, dinner theatre, tenting, Hawaiian day, movies, guest speakers, and parties on the first and last days of camp. Food and arts and crafts supplies were purchased as needed throughout the summer, as well as gifts for the children and volunteers on the final day of camp (sweatshirts, pencils, trinkets, etc.).

11) WHAT HAS/HAVE BEEN THE IMPACT(S) OF YOUR PROJECT? WILL THIS PROJECT CONTINUE WITHOUT I.G.A. FUNDS? IF SO, HOW?
See attached summary of evaluations.
This project has impacted on the lives of approximately twenty-five special needs children and their parents/caregivers. Without this Camp, participants would have had few opportunities to socialize with their peers, share in leisure activities, discover their creativity, participate in physical activities, or visit many of the local attractions. As noted in the attached newspaper article, confidence and growth were observed in many of the children. Some of the participants were designated as volunteers, which was also seen as a confidence-enhancer. Feedback received from parents suggested that the Camp provided parents with much-needed mutual support -many parents regularly attended the Camp, and thus had opportunity to share common experiences with one another.
It is hoped that this Summer Camp Program will be offered again next year. Its future does depend on further funding, and an application will again be forwarded to the IGA to request support for next year's Camp.
